Waldron Bulldogs new head football coach Shane Davis has started the process of implementing a “new brand of Bulldog football.” With a week of spring practice under his belt, Davis is excited and optimistic about the future. “The first week is over and I’m excited about what we’ve done,” said Davis. “We accomplished a lot and the team worked extremely hard.”

Davis replaces former head coach Larry Klatt (4-36) who resigned at the end of last season after four years of leading the Bulldogs. Davis comes to Waldron after winning the 2A State Championship last season at Strong High School. Davis was also named 8-2A Coach of the Year in 2010 and followed that up with Little Rock Touchdown Club 2A Coach of the Year last season.
“The team is in better condition, even after the first week,” explained Davis. “We’ve worked hard and all the kids have remained extremely enthusiastic, and that’s exciting.” The Bulldogs had a total of four practices last week and were rewarded with a day off on Friday. Coach Davis and the Bulldogs traveled to Rogers to watch their spring scrimmage. The purpose of the trip was not only to reward the players for a good week of practice, but to watch Rogers High School, as they run a similar offense that Davis is planning on running.
“Rogers runs the flex-bone and that’s a new offense for Waldron, so I wanted the team to see it in action and what better way to see it than to attend a spring scrimmage,” said Davis. “It was also a reward for the kids for really working hard this week and it was good for us to spend time together as a team.”
There have been a lot of new things taking place on the practice field of the Waldron Sports Complex and many parents and community members have taken advantage of seeing the “new brand of Bulldog football” by watching these practices. “It’s great to see cars out in the parking lot checking out our practices and this is spring ball,” said Davis. “I want to personally invite the community out to practice this week as it will be our first week in pads. Come out and check out the “County Fair” that everyone is talking about!”
The Bulldogs will put on the pads this week and practice will take place from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. every day. Practices are held on the practice field of the Sports Complex. “I’m anxious to put the pads on Monday and see how the kids respond,” Davis added.
The players are excited too, “I was worn out after the first practice,” said upcoming senior Bryson Betz. “That was the first practice I’ve had as a senior and I can’t wait till tomorrow. I’m stoked.” Upcoming senior Dakota Wagner reiterated Betz’s comments, “I’m lovin it,” said Wagner. “I’m exhausted after practice, but I can’t wait to get back on the field the next day and do it all over again.” The enthusiasm has also carried over to the coaching staff as well. “Everyone has been in a great mood,” said assistant coach Eric Warrington. “We’ve worked the kids hard this week and they’re ready for more every day, that’s exciting. We’re definitely headed in the right direction.”
It’s no secret that the Bulldogs haven’t been successful in the past several years; in fact, they haven’t made the playoffs since 2003. Coach Davis implied that is getting ready to change. “Look, the past is the past and we can’t go back and change that, but we can prepare for the future,” explained Davis. “This is a new process and it’s great that the players and coaches are all on the same page.”
Coach Davis is excited about the challenges he will face taking over the program and looks forward to turning things around. “It’s easy for a coach to take over a winning program, but to build one from the ground up, that’s a challenge,” added Davis. “Waldron will be a winning program!”
The number of football players going out for football has been down the last several years and that has already changed under the direction of Coach Davis. “The numbers are up,” said Davis. “We’ve had 45-50 kids out every day this week. We’re a young team, a lot of underclassmen, with the bulk of our numbers being sophomores.”
Coach Davis plans on keeping the numbers up and wants the players to know that he will take care of them. “I want them to know they come first and I will always be there for them and they will be part of a winning program.”
“I will never be content on finishing a season at week 10,” exclaimed Davis. “It might not happen immediately, but it’s not a question if it’s going to happen, we will get to the playoffs.”
Coach Davis talked about the fact that he chooses to be positive about the upcoming year and plans to stay that way throughout the season. “Yelling and screaming at the kids is not going to work,” said Davis. “We are going back to basics, starting over, teaching and getting the kids to believe in themselves.”
With 116 days until the kickoff of the 2012 season Coach Davis would like to fill the parking lot this week so you can see the changes and grab a piece of the excitement that is happening on the Waldron practice field. Come out to the field and support Coach Davis, the assistant coaches and the Bulldog football team as they all embark on a new journey together. Practices will be from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on the practice field of the Waldron Sports Complex. (Monday will be a shortened practice due to the Winter/Spring Athletic Banquet. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., with awards to follow starting at 6:00 p.m.)
Get out and support the Bulldogs and the “new brand of Bulldog football.”
